Newsbreakers

July 26, 2010

Carlos Guillen (calf) is expected to resume baseball activities in about a week, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View:

Contrary to Magglio Ordonez and his broken ankle, Guillen's ailment does not sound very serious. He probably won't need to spend much more than the necessary 15 days on the DL before being activated.

July 25, 2010

Carlos Guillen was placed on the DL Sunday with a strained right calf, according to the team's Twitter page.

Our View:

Magglio Ordonez was also officially placed on the DL today, but his fractured ankle is slightly more severe. Jeff Larish and Will Rhymes, whose contracts were purchased from Toledo, will join the team today.

July 24, 2010

Making a bad day worse for the Tigers, Carlos Guillen's calf injury is expected to land him on the disabled list, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck.

Our View:

It's bad enough to lose two of your starters in the same game, but it's even worse when you are in the middle of a very winnable, three-team race for the division. This will be Guillen's second stint on the disabled list this season. Expect Scott Sizemore to get the bulk of the playing time at second during his absence.

July 24, 2010

Carlos Guillen was forced from Detroit's game against the Blue Jays on Saturday night with a right calf strain, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck.

Our View:

He was replaced at second base by Scott Sizemore. Consider him doubtful for Sunday.

July 22, 2010

Dealing with a "personal matter," Carlos Guillen is out of the Tigers lineup on Thursday, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck.

Our View:

He is expected to return to the lineup on Friday, however. Through 223 at-bats this season, he is hitting .278 with five home runs and 30 RBI.

July 20, 2010

Carlos Guillen will not be in the Tigers lineup on Tuesday evening, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck.

Our View:

Ryan Raburn will take his place at second. It is believed to just be a routine day of rest for Guillen.

July 17, 2010

Carlos Guillen went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Detroit's 4-3 loss to the Indians in game one of a double-header on Saturday.

Our View:

He's now driven in 30 runs through his fist 208 at-bats this season. He's a great option in leagues where he has second-base eligibility.

July 5, 2010

Carlos Guillen went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI in a 12-7 win over Baltimore on Monday.

Our View:

Guillen posted his second straight game with an RBI after posting only one in his previous 13 outings. His average is solid, however, at .294.

June 13, 2010

Dealing with some soreness in his right calf, Carlos Guillen will sit out against the Pirates on Sunday, according to MLive.com.

Our View:

His absence comes just one day after he hit a walk-off home run. Consider him day-to-day.

June 12, 2010

Carlos Guillen hit his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the 10th inning on Saturday night, leading the Tigers to a 4-3 win over the Pirates.

Our View:

He now has 17 RBI through his first 116 at-bats this season. He is hitting .293.

June 5, 2010

Carlos Guillen hit sixth and started again at second base in the Tigers' 4-2 win over the Royals on Saturday. He finished the game 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

Our View:

Guillen should be second base-eligible in a lot of leagues at this point and he has provided steady production since coming off of the disabled list. He should also continue to see a lot of RBI opportunities hitting behind Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera, and Brennan Boesch as each of those hitters are well above .300.

June 4, 2010

Carlos Guillen was held out of the starting lineup on Friday due to a sore left toe, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Apparently the injury isn't serious and the Tigers held Guillen out of the lineup for precautionary reasons. He will be available to pinch hit in the game and should be ready to go Saturday after a bit of rest. Ryan Raburn is manning second base in his place.

May 30, 2010

Carlos Guillen hit a home run against Oakland on Sunday.

Our View:

The homer was his second of the season, and first since coming off the DL on Friday. He's now playing every day at second base and has the hitting prowess to be worth a look in fantasy circles now that he's due to gain middle infield eligibility.

May 28, 2010

The Tigers have activated Carlos Guillen (hamstring) from the DL, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View:

Guillen will shift from his previous spot in the outfield and serve as the Tigers' everyday second baseman, so he should gain eligibility there before long. He played well in his rehab stint, hitting .333 with five runs, three doubles, a home run, two RBI and two walks over five games at Triple-A Toledo, and in case you forgot, he had been playing well for the Tigers, hitting .311 before getting hurt on April 22. The upcoming second base eligibility should make him worth an add in most formats.

May 26, 2010

Carlos Guillen (hamstring) went 3-for-5 with three doubles for Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, according to the Detroit News.

Our View:

He's probably healthy enough to return to Detroit right now, but it sounds like the Tigers would like him to get a few more games under his belt as he makes the transition to second base. He could very likely be back by the end of this week.

May 18, 2010

Carlos Guillen is aiming to begin his rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Assuming he'll play a few games in the minors before coming off the DL, it sounds like he could be back with Detroit sometime in the middle of next week. He'll play second base when he returns to the Tigers.

May 15, 2010

Jason Beck of MLB.com reports that Carlos Guillen will start for the Tigers at second base when he is activated from the disabled list.

Our View:

Scott Sizemore was sent to Triple-A following Saturday's game and Ramon Santiago will likely handle most of the starts until Guillen returns in a couple of weeks. Whether Carlos stays there all season or not, we hope he's at least able to pick up enough starts to gain eligibility at the position. The move likely means that the Tigers are convinced Brennan Boesch can handle everyday duties in the outfield.

May 12, 2010

Updating a previous report, Carlos Guillen (hamstring) is unlikely to return to action in the next two weeks as expected, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Guillen tested his injury with agility drills on Wednesday, but isn't able to give 100 percent and the Tigers still have yet to let him take batting practice. He was expected to be available around May 20-24th, but has been bumped back about a week to the end of the month.

May 10, 2010

Carlos Guillen (hamstring) is expected to resume baseball activities today, according to MLive.com.

Our View:

Look for him to start a minor league rehab assignment in the near future. He should be able to return for the Tigers at some point in the next two weeks, though it's worth noting the Brennan Boesch has played well in his absence.

May 8, 2010

Carlos Guillen (hamstring) felt fine after taking a few swings on Friday, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View:

Friday marked the first time he took swings since landing on the DL. He's eligible to be activated today but certainly will not. Hopefully he can be back within the next week or two.

May 1, 2010

MLive.com reports that Carlos Guillen is unlikely to return from the DL when he is eligible on May 8. He is still unable to swing a bat.

Our View:

This contradicts the report from a few days ago that indicated that his injured hamstring was healing quickly. Ryan Raburn will continue to fill in for him in left field.

April 27, 2010

Carlos Guillen's left hamstring is healing nicely and he plans to return from the DL when eligible to do so on May 8, according to MLive.com.

Our View:

While Guillen is past his prime, he's still a quality hitter who's job should be safe as a near everyday player at the No. 5 spot in Detroit's lineup. Owners in deeper leagues should think about adding him if he's been dropped.

April 23, 2010

Carlos Guillen has been placed on the 15-day disabled list after straining his left hamstring against the Angels on Thursday night, according to MLive.com.

Our View:

Slugger Brennan Boesch will take his spot on the roster. A platoon of players will take Guillen's spot in left field and at designated hitter.

April 22, 2010

Carlos Guillen was removed from Thursday's contest against the Angels due to a strained left hamstring, according to the Associated Press. He suffered the injury while trying to score from second base on a Scott Sizemore single. Don Kelly replaced Guillen in left field.

Our View:

The severity of the injury remains to be seen, but Guillen hasn't exactly been the picture of health in recent years (he played in only 81 games in 2009 due to a shoulder injury), so it's a safe bet that he'll miss at least some time. We should have a better indication of how much time he'll miss in the next day or two.

April 13, 2010

With a two-run double in the seventh inning on Tuesday afternoon, Carlos Guillen's helped Detroit complete its wild comeback from a 5-0 deficit against the Royals, and emerge with a 6-5 win.

Our View:

He is now hitting .312 with five RBI this season, and looking healthy after a dismal 2009 campaign.

March 31, 2010

Carlos Guillen was forced from Detroit's Wednesday game with a left hamstring "spasm," and is considered day-to-day, according to the team.

Our View:

There's a chance he might not be ready for opening day. Expect an update on his condition tomorrow or Friday.
