The Indians are still interested in trading closer Kerry Wood, according to the Boston Globe.
Wood is scheduled to make $10 million next season, an enormous sum for a cost-conscious, cellar-dwelling team. So far, his market is believed to be very limited.
The Indians would like to deal Kerry Wood at this week's winter meetings, or at least draw the blueprints for such a deal to take place at a later date this upcoming season, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Given that the Indians are not expected to contend for anything this season, it doesn't make much sense for them to pay $10.5 million to a 32-year-old closer. Keep your eyes on former Cardinal Chris Perez, who was phenomenal after coming to Cleveland last season and would surely take over the closing duties for the Indians should Wood be dealt.
FoxSports.com is reporting that the Indians are in no hurry to move closer Kerry Wood this offseason. The Indians have said they will listen to offers, but they do not plan on trading him unless they get blown away by a proposal.
The Indians would likely have to pay a significant portion of Wood's remianing $10.5 million salary, so there is no reason for them to feel like they have to make a move. Still, Wood could still be moved for the right price, but for now it looks like he will remain with the Indians.
ESPN's Buster Olney reports via Twitter that the Indians are willing to listen to offers regarding their struggling closer, Kerry Wood.
Wood is owed $10.5 million next season and has an $11 million dollar vesting option in 2011 if he closes out 55 games next year (a mark he will not likely reach). The Indians would like to unload Wood's salary and move young, affordable flamethrower Chris Perez into the full-time closer spot, but in a closer-rich offseason they may have a hard time finding someone interested in Wood. Let alone someone willing to eat his monster salary.
Kerry Wood claimed his ninth save of the season in Tuesday's 5-4 win at Pittsburgh. He gave up one earned run on two hits over two thirds of an inning, and had two walks and one strikeout.
Wood has allowed runs in each of his last four outings, and almost blew his third save of June. He will remain an unstable fantasy closer, especially with the struggling Indians.
Kerry Wood allowed four runs on three hits in just 0.2 innings as he blew the save and took the loss against the Royals on Tuesday.
Wood has been anything but automatic this season, but he has been a strikeout machine. He is still an option as a closer, but his value has decreased since the season started.
Kerry Wood allowed three hits, two walks, and three earned runs while recording only two outs and taking the loss against Boston on Monday.
Wood has allowed runs in three of his eight starts, but this was his worst outing yet. He was pitching on consecutive nights for the first time this season and thrown 41 pitches in those appearances. He may be unavailable over the next couple games for the Indians.
Kerry Wood struggled on his way to his second save of the season on Tueday. Wood allowed two runs on a home run by David DeJesus while striking out two batters in the ninth inning of Cleveland's 8-7 win.
Perhaps the poor performances of the other Cleveland relievers is rubbing off on Wood. He should be a fine option as long as he is healthy, but he tends to make things more interesting than necessary.
Kerry Wood earned his first save of the season on Wednesday in the Indians' 5-4 win over the Royals. He has given up only one run while striking out six in his three outings this year.
Wood looks to be on track, as he finally got a save opportunity and converted it with no problems. He is looking like he could be an elite closer in 2009 if he can stay healthy.
Kerry Wood struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning of Sunday's 8-4 win over the Blue Jays. Unfortunately, he was unable to record his first save of the season.
That gives Wood six whiffs over two innings of work in 2009, apparently pointing to the fact that he may be as nasty as ever. As usual, the concern with him is injuries, but until he suffers a set back, he should be a fairly strong play.
Kerry Wood allowed three hits and two earned runs in one inning of work on Saturday in Cleveland's 4-3 win over Houston.
Not exactly a strong performance from Kerry, but he has had a pretty solid spring overall. As always, he will be as valuable as he is healthy this season.
According to the Associated Press, Kerry Wood worked a scoreless inning with a strikeout in Tuesday's spring game against the Angels.
Wood seems on track this spring and can be an extremely valuable closer when fully healthy.
Bud Shaw of the Plain Dealer reports that Kerry Wood threw his first live session this spring and felt no discomfort in his back. Wood apparently threw hard and looked convincingly effective against live hitters. He is scheduled to appear in his first game next Tuesday.
This is good news for Wood. He's an injury monkey, so he's not in the clear yet, but it's a promising start. When healthy he is a top 10 closer option.
Kerry Wood noted that his back is no longer sore, according to Yahoo Sports. He will throw a bullpen session today.
The Indians want him to make two appearances in the Cactus League by March 10, so his back ailment did not push him off schedule. We will continue to monitor his back, due to his poor track record with injuries.
Kerry Wood is nursing a sore back, according to the SF Chronicle. He hasn't thrown off a mound since last weekend, and he will rest for a few more days before resuming his pitching routine.
Wood had a poor track record with durability during his days with the Cubs, so this ailment is worth monitoring.
Showing some serious class, Kerry Wood took out an add on Sunday to thanks Cubs fans for their support the past 10 years, according to the Associated Press. The add read in part, ""Although I'm a member of a new 'Tribe,' I will forever be a Chicagoan."
Wood will try to build upon his 34 save effort of last season in Cleveland this year after the Cubs were unwilling to offer a substantial deal to him this off-season due to his injury filled past.
