According to Bill Ladson on Twitter, the Nationals have declined arbitration on starter Livan Hernandez, first baseman Dimitri Young, catcher Josh Bard, outfielder Austin Kearns and reliever Ron Villone.
None of the above players were Type A or B free agents, so the Nationals stood nothing to gain by offering them arbitration. It doesn't mean they definitely won't return, but for a young team with a very limited payroll, it seems foolish to invest in washed up, aging athletes. Expect the Nats to push prospects and go forward on the cheap.
Livan Hernandez gave up three earned runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings in Friday's 6-3 win at Atlanta. He had one walk with two strikeouts.
Hernandez was not really solid, but the Nats scored enough runs for him to improve his record to 9-12. He was winless over his previous three starts.
Livan Hernandez had a typical outing on Sunday, allowing three runs in six innings, but took a no-decision, as Washington lost 6-3 in ten innings.
The Nats want a veteran presence in their rotation next season, and even though Hernandez has posted a 6.00 ERA in 42 innings in Washington, there's a strong chance he will be back in 2010.
Livan Hernandez took it on the chin on Tuesday. The Dodgers spanked him to the tune of eight runs in 3.2 innings and he fell to 8-12 on the season after the 14-2 pummeling.
Hernandez allowed 12 base runners in his 3.2 innings and the outing marked his worst of the season. It's a shame as he was coming off back-to-back quality starts.
Livan Hernandez was quality on Wednesday, allowing just two runs in six innings, but still took his 11th loss of the season, as the Nationals lost 6-1 in Philadelphia.
At 8-11 this season, Livan is in danger of not posting a double-digit win total for the first time since 1999. He likely has three starts left, but the odds of him winning two of them are slim.
Livan Hernandez had a very nice outing on Thursday, allowing just two runs on six hits and a walk over 7.1 innings. He fanned two and earned the win with a 8-7 victory over the Phillies.
Thursday provided Livan with his first win with the Nationals this year. He has had quality outing in two of his three starts with Washington thus far.
Livan Hernandez was lit up for six earned runs on eight hits over five innings in Saturday's 9-5 loss to the Marlins at Nationals Park. He issued four walks with six strikeouts.
Hernandez was handed his 10th loss of 2009, and is winless over his last seven starts.
Livan Hernandez gave up three earned runs on seven hits over eight innings in Monday's 3-1 loss at San Diego. He had one walk with five strikeouts.
Hernandez suffered his ninth loss of 2009, and went 0-4 with a 7.31 ERA over five starts this month.
Livan Hernandez turned in a quality start in his first appearance for the Nationals on Wednesday, pitching six innings of two-run ball, but took a no-decision as the Cubs exploded late, winning 9-4 in Chicago.
The ageless Livan could be a nice story if he finishes the season strong for the last place Nationals, but if he couldn't post an ERA better than 5.47 pitching in the very pitcher friendly Citi Field, don't count on it.
MLB.com is reporting that the Washington Nationals have signed starting pitcher Livan Hernandez. Hernandez was released by the Mets last week after compiling a 7-8 record and a 5.47 ERA.
Apparently there is a team out there who will give a chance to an aging starting pitcher who has an ERA over 5.00. While we can't say we are surprised, it seems like a curious move for a team who is out of the race and who has so much young pitching. It seems like Hernandez will serve mostly as a tutor for the youngsters, which could be a good thing, since the Nats have the youngest rotation in baseball. We don't expect much production out of him, however.
According to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post on Twitter, the Mets have released aging starter Livan Hernandez.
Hernandez was let go to make room on the roster for Billy Wagner. He was signed in the offseason for $1 million plus incentives and basically did what you would expect of an aging, inexpensive pitcher. He went 7-8 with a 5.47 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 23 starts this season. Nelson Figueroa or Tim Redding will likely replace him in the rotation.
Livan Hernandez was lit up for six earned runs on 11 hits over 5.1 innings in Monday's 10-1 loss to the Giants at Citi Field. He had one walk and one strikeout.
Hernandez now has a losing record at 7-8 following his dismal performance. He has taken a loss in each of his last three starts, and is winless over his last four.
Livan Hernandez is not being removed from the Mets rotation, and will pitch on Monday against the Giants at Citi Field, according to the New York Post.
Apparently a 5.28 ERA and 1.57 WHIP will get you a lot farther now than they used to. If he hasn't already been removed from your rotation, however, perhaps you should be removed as manager of your own team.
Metsblog.com is reporting that Mets' starter Livan Hernandez may be on thin ice after his terrible performance Tuesday night against the Diamondbacks. Hernandez is 2-6 with a 6.79 ERA over his last 11 starts.
The Mets may be throwing away this season, but they can't possibly keep sending Hernandez out there the way he is pitching. They have other options, such as Tim Redding and Nelson Figueroa, who can give at least adequate starts, so expect Livan to be out before long.
The little light that remains in Livan Hernandez's career flickered dangerously on Tuesday night, as the ageless righty allowed five runs in just four innings of the Mets' 6-2 loss in Arizona.
Only a team like the "Mail It In" Mets (as the New York sportswriters now so fondly call them) could continue to run a starter like Hernandez out there. In his last seven starts, the 34-year-old righty now has an ERA of 8.50 and has gone 2-4. If you are still starting him, be sure to schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.
Livan Hernandez toughed out five innings without great stuff on Thursday, but got hit hard nonetheless. The ageless righty surrendered seven runs and walked four as the Mets lost 8-3 in San Diego.
Put simply, Livan would probably no longer be in the Mets rotation if the team was in a pennant race. He can still eat up innings, but he's had three outings of seven runs or more since July 1, and looks to be on his last major league breathe. He's looked done before and came back, so you never know, but things aren't looking good.
Livan Hernandez allowed two earned runs on four hits over six innings in Friday's 3-2 loss to Arizona at Citi Field. He had two walks and four strikeouts, and gave up two homers.
Hernandez had a good outing by his standards, but was handed a no-decision due to a lack of run support. On the positive side, he trimmed his ERA to 4.77 and has not taken a loss over his last three starts.
Break up the Mets! Livan Hernandez pitched seven tough innings on Sunday, as the Amazins beat the Astros for the second straight game, this time 8-3.
After looking to be in danger of losing his rotation spot, Hernandez has now reeled off two straight, solid seven inning starts. He wasn't great, but he was good enough to give the Mets a chance to win on Sunday, and that's all the Amazins can ask for this season.
Livan Hernandez allowed two earned runs on five hits over seven innings in Monday's 6-2 win at Washington. He issued two walks with three strikeouts.
Hernandez enjoyed a solid outing, and now has a winning record at 6-5. He snapped a four-game losing streak, and looks to remain an unstable fantasy option.
Mets manager Jerry Manuel has seriously suggested that his injury decimated team may use Livan Hernandez at first or third base and as a pinch-hitter, according to the New York Post.
The New York Mets' 2009 season is simply redefining what a miserable season can be. They have lost three starting pitchers to injury, four All-Star offensive players to injury, and are now forced to consider using a journeyman pitcher in the field. This is the same team that is already starting Fernando Tatis on a regular basis. In all honestly, however, Hernandez and his .229 career average might be a better offensive option than some of the players the Mets are currently playing, specifically Angel Berroa and Daniel Murphy. Hernandez is also a noted good athlete, so he likely wouldn't be that bad in the field. Of course, this is still probably unlikely to happen, but it wouldn't be at all surprising if the Mets' 2009 season was the first to produce a player with SP/1B/3B eligibility.
Livan Hernandez's rotation spot could be in danger, according to the New York Post.
Livan started out great for the Mets in '09, but has now failed to make it out of the fourth inning in his last two starts, and has given up fewer than three runs just once since June 7. He now a 5.10 ERA on the season, and a cringe-worthy 1.58 WHIP. Whatever little fantasy value he had earlier this year has all but dried up.
Livan Hernandez was torched for eight earned runs on 11 hits over a mere four innings in Thursday's 11-2 loss to the Dodgers at Citi Field. He issued four walks with two strikeouts.
Hernandez has taken a loss in four straight starts, and gave up 15 earned runs over his last two. He is not fit for fantasy duty outside of deeper leagues.
Livan Hernandez was shelled by the Phillies on Friday. He allowed seven runs on ten hits and four walks over just three innings before being yanked. He fell to 5-4 as the Mets got pummeled 7-2.
Hernandez has been very important stabilizing force in a patchwork Mets rotation this season, but the aging innings-eater isn't an ideal fantasy option with his 4.56 ERA. Outside of NL-only leagues he has little value.
Livan Hernandez was hit with the loss on Sunday night as the Mets fell to the Yankees by a score of 4-2. Hernandez went seven innings and allowed three runs on three hits while walking five and striking out one. He is now 5-3 on the year.
Livan was pretty good tonight, but the five walks was way too high. He only gave up three runs in his seven innings, which isn't bad, but his team just couldn't give him enough to get a win. Hernandez is still a solid option in NL-only leagues, but his lack of strikeouts limits him to only deeper mixed leagues.
Livan Hernandez was solid again on Tuesday, going seven innings and striking out three, but did in the Mets with one mistake - loading the bases in front of Albert Pujols. Pujols ripped a two-run single and provided all the cushion Joel Pineiro would need as he pitched the Cards to a 3-0 shutout.
Livan's renaissance is still very real, though, as the ageless right-hander has now gone seven or more innings in five of his last seven starts, lowering his ERA from 4.93 to 4.05 over that span. He's still not a great option, but is a decent one at spot starter or roster filler.
Livan Hernandez rebounded from a bad outing last time out, and went seven innings for the second time in three starts, but took a hard luck no-decision as the Mets fell 5-4 in Citi Field.
After disastrous 2007 and 2008 seasons, Hernandez has somehow once again become a serviceable fantasy baseball pitcher. You might take flak for having him on your team, but he's pitching well enough to warrant a spot.
Livan Hernandez was rocked for six earned runs on seven hits over a mere 5.1 innings of work in Friday's 9-8 loss at Yankee Stadium. He had one walk and one strikeout.
Hernandez was a grave disappointment tonight against a strong Yankees' lineup, as he hurled seven scoreless innings in his previous outing against Washington.
Livan Hernandez shut down the Nationals for seven innings on Sunday. He scattered four hits and four walks and earned his fifth victory after the Mets 7-0 win.
Livan has been surprisingly effective this season. He's 5-1 with a sub-four ERA and has racked up quality starts in three of his last four outings.
Livan Hernandez went the distance on Tuesday, allowing just one run on nine hits and a walk. He improved to 4-1 as the Mets dusted the Nationals 6-1.
Hernandez threw 127 pitches and held and struck ot six Nationals in his one. He's been a very pleasant surprise for the Mets this season with four wins and a 4.28 ERA. He won't get any Cy Young votes, but he's doing more than what the club expected out of him.
Livan Hernandez improved to 3-1 on Sunday as the Mets defeated the Pirates 8-4. He scattered seven hits and four walks while allowing just two runs in six innings of work. He struck out five in the game.
It wasn't pretty, but Hernandez came out on top again. Aside from those three wins, Hernandez figures to hurt more fantasy teams than he helps. It's unlikely he remains this fortunate for much longer.
Livan Hernandez had a fine outing on Tuesday and was rewarded with the win after a 4-3 Mets' victory. He held the Braves to just one run on seven hits and two walks over 6.1 innings and struck out two.
Hernandez has been knocked around this season, but after a strong start today finds himself 2-1 on the season. He's worth a look in NL-only leagues if you need wins (the Mets should give him plenty of offensive support), but he has trouble going deep in games.
Livan Hernandez got shelled on Thursday as the Cardinal bats tattooed him for seven runs on nine hits and walk over just 4.1 innings. He surrendered three home runs and got the loss as the Mets fell 12-8 and were swept by the first-place Cardinals.
Livan was solid but unspectacular in his first two starts, but he just looked lost in this one. He ran into one of the league's most potent offenses and made a critical error. He decided to pitch to Albert Pujols. El Hombre took him deep twice and Hernandez's ERA quickly ballooned to 7.31.
Pitcher Livan Hernandez gave the Mets another strong start on Friday. He was solid through five innings before serving up a three-run homer to Ryan Braun in the sixth inning. Hernandez took a no-decision, and the Mets won 5-4.
The final line didn't look great, but the Mets were surely pleased. And you can't be too mad when a guy gives up a homer to a stud like Braun. Hernandez will fall apart eventually, but he has looked decent through two outings.
Livan Hernandez had a surprisingly strong start on Saturday and delivered the Marlins their first loss of the season. He tossed 6.2 innings and allowed just two runs on six hits and three walks. He is now 1-0 on the season.
Livan was good for the Mets, but allowed a lot of base runners and only struck out four over his 6.2 innings. This was a positive for him, but still remains an unsafe fantasy play.
The Mets purchased the contract of Livan Hernandez from Triple-A Buffalo. He will get the start tonight against the Marlins.
The Mets are taking a gamble on Hernandez and hoping that he'll be better than his 6.05 ERA last season. Don't feel the need to gamble the same way with your fantasy lineup.
Livan Hernandez pitched three innings of scoreless ball against the Red Sox on Friday evening.
Hernandez, who has nailed down the final spot in the Mets rotation, allowed just one hit, but he needed 50 pitches to get through five. That sort of pitch count won't cut it during the regular season.
Livan Hernandez has officially been named the fifth starter for the Mets, according to the New York Daily News.
This comes as no surprise as the Mets were not burdened with many other options. The veteran had a down season in 2008, but a rebound is certainly not out of the question. He has a 4.02 ERA in 15.2 innings this spring.
Pitcher Livan Hernandez is basically assured of starting the 2009 season as the Mets fifth starter, MLB.com reports. Freddy Garcia and Jon Niese have been sent to minor league camp, and Tim Redding is expected to open the year on the disabled list.
Hernandez owns a 3.07 ERA this spring, but we know better than to expect much once the regular campaign rolls around. NL-only owners are free to take a late-round flier and hope for wins. That's as far as we'll go.
Livan Hernandez is close to nailing down the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation, according to the NY Daily News. Skipper Jerry Manuel said, "He has a good presence about him on the mound, in the dugout. It is like he brings a different energy for us. I would have to say he's put himself in a real good position."
Hernandez would be worth consideration as a flier for NL-only leagues if he is named the fifth starter, but the 34-year-old vet holds a career 4.37 ERA over 2551 innings in the majors.
Livan Hernandez threw two shutout innings while allowing only two walks in the Mets 6-2 loss to the Nationals on Saturday.
This was his best outing of the spring and he is still near the top of the mix for the fifth starter's job in New York. However, his tendency to generate a high WHIP limits any potential fantasy value.
According to the New York Daily News, Livan Hernandez has emerged as the favorite to earn the fifth starter spot in the Mets' rotation.
Livan has flip-flopped often this spring bouncing in and out of favor. As of right now, he's the man. Tim Redding is expected to be used in long relief.
Livan Hernandez lost his second decision of the spring Sunday, allowing three runs on five hits in four innings against the Nationals.
Once thought to be the favorite to lock down the fifth spot in the rotation, Hernandez has struggled thus far this spring, opening the door for Tim Redding, Jon Niese, and Freddy Garcia.
The NY Daily News believes Livan Hernandez is the early favorite for the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation after firing two hitless innings on only 18 pitches in Friday's exhibition loss to the Cardinals.
Freddy Garcia, Tim Redding and Jon Niese are the other candidates for the fifth slot in the rotation. Redding expects to hold the job, but has been hindered by a shoulder ailment. Hernandez would be worth a look as a flier for NL-only leagues if he earns the spot.
Livan Hernandez has signed a minor league deal with the Mets worth $1 million plus incentives, according to the NY Daily News.
This signing makes it more unlikely Pedro Martinez will return to New York. He will be given a shot to compete for the No. 5 spot in the Mets' rotation with Freddy Garcia, Tim Redding and Jon Niese.
The Padres have interest in Livan Hernandez, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The 34-year-old hurler held a poor 6.05 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over 180 innings (31 starts) with the Twins and Rockies last season. He would benefit from playing his home games at pitcher-friendly Petco Park if signed by San Diego, but not likely enough to merit fantasy attention.
