Newsbreakers

October 2, 2009

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that Jeff Suppan should pitch Sunday's season finale for the Brewers.

Our View:

Suppan would be making his 30th start, but is expected to be replaced by Chris Narveson early in the game. Suppan carries a poor 5.30 ERA and 1.70 ERA.

September 30, 2009

Jeff Suppan got lip up once again on Wednesday, allowing eight runs in six innings, as the Brewers lost 10-6 in Denver.

Our View:

Things just didn't work out for Suppan in 2009. After 29 starts, he will end the season with a 7-12 record, 1.70 WHIP and 5.30 ERA.

September 24, 2009

Jeff Suppan had another terrible outing on Thursday as the Brewers fell to the Phillies 9-4. Suppan lasted only 4.1 innings and allowed seven runs on 12 hits while walking two and striking out two.

Our View:

Soup is ready to put 2009 behind him, as his 7-11 record and 5.04 ERA are far from what was expected of him this season. His best days might be behind him, and so are his days as a fantasy pitcher.

September 19, 2009

Jeff Suppan had a nice outing on Saturday, holding the Astros to just two runs on five hits over seven innings in a 7-2 win. He fanned seven against zero walks and improved to 7-10 on the season.

Our View:

This was clearly one of Soup's best outings on the season, but he's still too risky to start in fantasy formats. Games like this one don't come around too often.

September 14, 2009

Jeff Suppan only issued one earned run on three hits over seven innings in Monday's 2-0 loss at Chicago. He had four walks with two strikeouts.

Our View:

Suppan pitched well, but was forced to take a loss due to no run support. He allowed one or less earned runs in three of his last four starts, but only earned one win over the span.

September 9, 2009

Jeff Suppan was victimized by his former team and World Series pals on Wednesday. Albert Pujols and the Cardinals touched him for four runs on eight hits and a walk over just five innings.

Our View:

Soup fell to 6-9 after Wednesday's 5-1 loss and now holds a 5.05 ERA on the season. He's only mustered two quality starts since July 3rd and has become fantasy irrelevant outside of the deepest leagues.

September 4, 2009

Jeff Suppan allowed only two unearned runs on Friday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Brewers fell to the Giants 3-2. Suppan pitched 5.2 innings and allowed two hits while walking four and striking out three.

Our View:

Soup was actually very good tonight, but his defense and his bullpen let him down. Overall, he has struggled significantly this season, and even a few good starts in a row won't make him a good fantasy performer.

August 30, 2009

Jeff Suppan had a nice bounce back outing on Sunday. He held the Pirates to just one run on eight hits and three walks over six innings and earned his sixth win of the season.

Our View:

Soup has been a disappointment this season, the usually durable and reliable starter has spent time on the DL and has just six wins and 5.20 ERA on the season. He doesn't appear to be worth the big contract the Brewers handed him a couple seasons ago.

August 25, 2009

Jeff Suppan made his return from the DL on Tuesday, and unfortunately he picked up right where he left off before the injury. Suppan went 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits while walking five and striking out one.

Our View:

Soup has been terrible this season, and there is no reason to think he will be any better as the season wears down. His ERA has now climbed to 5.38, and fantasy owners should stay away down the stretch.

August 25, 2009

As expected, Jeff Suppan has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and will start for the Brewers against the Reds tonight.

Our View:

Suppan has an ugly 1.70 WHIP this season to go along with a bad 5.27 ERA - numbers that are tough to swallow even in NL-only leagues.

August 22, 2009

Accordng to the Twitter page of Brewers' beat writer Tom Haudricourt, starter Jeff Suppan is expected to come off the DL and pitch Tuesday against Cincinnati. Suppan has been on the DL with a strained left oblique.

Our View:

Soup got rocked in his first rehab outing at Single-A Wisconsin, and he was not very good before he went on the DL. Anyone outside of NL-only leagues shouldn't bother with him, and even NL-only leaguers may want to think twice before picking him up or playing him.

August 15, 2009

Jeff Suppan struggled in Saturday's rehab start with Single-A Wisconsin, as he allowed four runs on five hits in 3.1 innings, according to MLBblogs.com.

Our View:

31 of his 39 pitches landed for strikes, and Suppan may return to the Brewers' rotation during their August 21-24 series in Washington, but skipper Ken Macha noted that is not set in stone following tonight's poor showing.

August 11, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that Brewers' starter Jeff Suppan could go out on a rehab assignment sometime next week. Suppan has been on the DL since July 30 with a strained left oblique.

Our View:

Suppan's recovery is moving slowly, and he might not be back with the team until closer to September. The Brewers are in desperate need of starting pitching right now, so the sooner Soup comes back, the better.

July 30, 2009

Jeff Suppan has been placed on the 15-day DL with a strained left oblique, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View:

With Suppan out, the Brewers will need a starting pitcher for Saturday's game at San Diego.

July 28, 2009

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel is reporting that Brewers' starter Jeff Suppan will be examined by a doctor after experiencing some soreness in his left side. Suppan was lit up in his start Monday for 10 runs over 5.1 innings.

Our View:

Soup didn't look like himself last night, and although he hasn't been great this season, he isn't as bad as he showed last night. We will keep you updated on the results of his visit, but it looks likely that he could miss some time.

July 27, 2009

Jeff Suppan has been lit up for 10 earned runs on 10 hits over 5.1 innings in Monday's 14-6 loss to the Nationals at Miller Park.

Our View:

Suppan falls to 5-8, and is winless over his last eight starts. He is only worth a look in deeper fantasy leagues for his next trip to the mound.

July 22, 2009

It only took four home runs over 3.1 innings for Jeff Suppan to get the hook on Wednesday. The veteran starter allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks, but did not factor in the decision as the Brewers fell 8-7 to the Pirates in walk-off fashion.

Our View:

Soup has yet to record a sub-4.00 ERA in any month this season. His best effort came in June when he was 2-2 with a 4.28 mark. You figure with that Brewers' offense behind him he'd hold a better record than 5-7. He's a fantasy risk in any format at this point.

July 17, 2009

Jeff Suppan didn't get any run support on Friday as the Brewers fell to the Reds 4-0. Suppan went six innings and allowed three runs, no earned, on seven hits while walking four and striking out two. He is now 5-7 on the season.

Our View:

Soup didn't get any help from his offense or defense tonight, and thus he takes the loss. He was pretty good tonight, but overall he hasn't been this season. He should probably only be owned in NL-only leagues, as his mixed league value is not good right now.

July 8, 2009

Jeff Suppan scratched and clawed through 5.2 innings on Wednesday, departing with the game tied 4-4. He took a no-decision as the Brewers eked out a 5-4 victory over the Cardinals.

Our View:

Soup has long been a "gamer" so-to-speak, but no longer has any fantasy value outside of an emergency spot start.

July 3, 2009

Jeff Suppan was denied a win on Friday despite a strong performance. He held the Cubs to one run on four hits and two walks over seven innings, but the Brewers eventually fell in the tenth.

Our View:

Friday's start was a nice rebound for Soup, who had allowed 12 runs in his last 10.2 innings. Still his start was against the anemic Cubs' offense, so don't get too excited yet.

June 28, 2009

Jeff Suppan was not good again on Sunday as the Brewers fell to the Giants 7-0. Suppan allowed five runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out three. He is 5-6 on the year.

Our View:

Soup has not been very good this season, and his fantasy value is steadily slipping. He is a risky play in mixed leagues at this point, but he could still be a player in NL-only leagues.

June 23, 2009

Jeff Suppan wasn't sharp on Tuesday, allowing seven runs (four earned) in five innings as the Brewers lost 7-3 to the Twins.

Our View:

Soup is now 5-5 on the season, and certainly no longer an everyday roster option. He could hurl a gem if the matchup is right, but should be started with the utmost caution.

June 12, 2009

Jeff Suppan allowed two earned runs on nine hits over 6.2 innings in Friday's 7-2 win over the White Sox at Miller Park. He had no walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:

Suppan is pitching well as he won back-to-back starts, and has allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last three. He is worth employing in NL-only leagues in his next trip to the mound.

June 6, 2009

Jeff Suppan evened up his record at 4-4 with his 3-0 win over the Braves on Saturday. Suppan went 5.1 innings and did not allow a run on six hits while walking three and striking out two.

Our View:

Nice performance by Soup tonight, and he now has four wins on the year. He doesn't strike many guys out, but he can be a decent starter when he pitches like he did tonight. He is probably not a mixed league candidate, but he is serviceable in NL-only leagues.

June 1, 2009

Jeff Suppan took a no-decision as he allowed two earned runs on seven hits over five innings in Monday's 7-4 loss at Florida. He had three walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:

This was one of Suppan's better outings of the season. He has now gone three straight starts without registering a win.

May 26, 2009

Jeff Suppan got blasted by his former team on Tuesday, as he allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk before being pulled in the fourth inning. He took the loss and fell to 3-4 on the season as the Brewers got stomped by the Cardinals 8-1.

Our View:

Soup has been brilliant against his former team in the past, but he was exploited in this start. His ERA ballooned to 5.23 and he is a risky start even in NL-only leagues right now.

May 16, 2009

Jeff Suppan was phenomenal against his old team on Saturday. The former Cardinal tossed seven shutout innings scattering six hits and two walks and earned his third victory of the season in a 1-0 win.

Our View:

Soup lowered his ERA to 4.63 after this affair and put a cap on his dominance of the Cardinals since signing a big free agent contract with the Brewers in 2007. He is now 5-0 with an ERA under 2.00 in six starts against the Redbirds since he helped them win a World Championship in 2006.

May 5, 2009

Jeff Suppan wasn't great on Tuesday, but he was good enough to get the win. He allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in 5.2 innings as the Brewers topped the Pirates 8-5.

Our View:

Soup hasn't been very good this season, which is always evidenced by a start like Tuesday's actually lowering your ERA. Still he's 2-2 on the year and could get a decent amount of wins in '09 if the Brewers' offense steps up.

April 19, 2009

Jeff Suppan had his best start of the season as the Brewers beat the Mets 4-2 on Sunday. He lasted six innings and gave up eight hits, a walk, and two earned runs while taking home his first win of the season.

Our View:

The veteran got an extra day of rest this time through the rotation, and that may have played a part in his performance. He was awful in his first two starts, but was able to limit the damage against the Mets today. He is still far more likely to hurt fantasy teams rather than help them.

April 14, 2009

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jeff Suppan's scheduled start has been pushed back from Saturday to Sunday.

Our View:

The Brewers want Soup to get another day to pitch a side session, so Yovani Gallardo will pitch Saturday in his place. Suppan isn't injured, he's just struggling with his delivery, and control, and ERA, and well, you get it.

April 12, 2009

Jeff Suppan walked six hitters and gave up two hits, half of which were home runs, while surrendering five earned runs in 3.2 innings of work in the Brewers' 8-5 loss to the Cubs on Sunday. It marked his second loss of the season.

Our View:

Suppan did not hold much fantasy value heading into the season, but now it just looks like he holds negative value to the Brewers as well. If he continues to pitch as poorly as he has in his first two outings, the team may be looking for a replacement soon.

April 7, 2009

Jeff Suppan allowed six runs and six hits in four innings on Tuesday as the Brewers fell 10-6 at San Francisco.

Our View:

This surely won't be the last time Suppan gets rocked like this. In order to win, he needs to be pinpoint accurate with his pitches to compensate for below-average velocity. He obviously was very hittable today.

April 2, 2009

Jeff Suppan allowed only one run on three hits in five innings Thursday against the White Sox.

Our View:

Suppan was a modest 10-10 with a 4.96 ERA in Milwaukee last season. With no CC Sabathia in the rotation or Ben Sheets in Milwaukee in 2009, Suppan will have step up his game to make the Brewers contenders in the NL Central.

March 23, 2009

Jeff Suppan is expected to be the Brewers' starting pitcher for opening day April 7, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Our View:

The way the rotation is set up, Suppan, Yovani Gallardo and Manny Parra will start the first three games of the season in San Francisco. Suppan is worth a look in NL-only leagues.

March 17, 2009

Jeff Suppan finally got the good start he was looking for this spring. He held the Giants to one hit over five scoreless innings Tuesday and did not walk a batter.

Our View:

Soup needed this as he's been far from effective in any previous starts this spring. He's assured of making the Brewers' rotation, but should be avoided in fantasy drafts other than deep NL-only leagues.

March 12, 2009

Jeff Suppan got roughed up by San Diego on Thursday, allowing five runs off six hits and two walks while striking out two in three innings of work.

Our View:

Suppan has not looked sharp yet this spring and has given up nine runs in 11 innings, including three home runs. He'll have to start picking things up before he can receive any attention from fantasy owners, even in NL-only leagues.

March 2, 2009

Jeff Suppan gave up a three-run home run to Emil Brown in Monday's 4-3 loss. He did not give up any more runs in his three innings of action, but did allow three hits and two walks.

Our View:

Suppan gave up a Bobby Crosby dinger in his last spring appearance. He allowed 30 last season and all signs point to starting your fantasy hitters when facing Suppan this season. Avoid having to rely on the veteran's right arm in 2009.

February 25, 2009

Jeff Suppan gave up three hits and a solo home run to Bobby Crosby as the Brewers tied the A's on Wednesday. He struck out one batter and walked none.

Our View:

From July on last season, Suppan posted a 5.98 ERA, 2.2 HR/9 and 3.9 K/9. His best seasons are far behind him, and this season could get ugly if he continues to give up so many bombs.
