Newsbreakers

September 4, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in tonight's 6-3 loss to the Mariners at McAfee Coliseum. He hit a single and a two-run homer off Ryan Rowland-Smith.

Our View:

Garciaparra hit his third homer of 2009, with his previous shot coming way back on May 23 against the Diamondbacks.

August 6, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra went 1-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI in the A's 6-4 loss to the Rangers on Thursday.

Our View:

Nomar can produce when healthy, but healthy is not something that comes regularly for him these days. It seems like he is always tweaking a muscle or turning an ankle, and he is just not reliable enough to warrant fantasy consideration.

July 31, 2009

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Nomar Garciaparra injured his quad running out an infield single in Thursday's game.

Our View:

The oft-injured Garciaparra was lifted for a pinch runner, but didn't feel the injury was serious. He's being tested by team doctors and should be considered day-to-day for now, but don't be surprised if this turns out to be more than just a "tweak". It is Nomar after all.

July 30, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra went 3-for-4 with a run scored on Thursday in the A's 8-5 loss to the Red Sox. Garciaparra is hitting .272 on the season.

Our View:

Nomar can still hit when he is healthy, but unfortunately it seems like he is rarely on the field long enough to contribute to a fantasy squad. He is still a little banged up, so find another option that provides more consistent production.

July 12, 2009

According to MLB.com, A's infielder Nomar Garciaparra is expected to start at first base on Sunday in his team's game against the Rays. This will be the first time since July 3 that he has started a game at that position.

Our View:

Nomar may see more time at first as his health improves, as it may be a platoon situation between Garciaparra and Jason Giambi. If he could get completely healthy and stay that way, he could be a fantasy contributor, but until he shows he can do that owners should stay away.

July 8, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra is not expected to start Wednesday in the A's series finale against the Red Sox, according to MLB.com. The A's training staff has suggested a one-day-on, two-days-off approach with Garciaparra at this point.

Our View:

Nomar will be available to pinch hit on his off days, but for now it looks like he will only be starting a few days a week. His fantasy value was already extremely low, but now he should probably not be owned in any format. You need a guy who will be in the lineup nearly every day.

July 6, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in tonight's 6-0 win at Boston.

Our View:

Nomar started the game in the DH role, and enjoyed a solid outing against his former team. He has two hits in two of three games so far this month.

July 6, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra will serve as the DH when the Athletics battle the Red Sox at Fenway Park tonight, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:

Nomar was among Boston's most popular players during his run with the club from 1997-2004. He is worth consideration for deeper fantasy leagues.

July 5, 2009

MLB.com is reporting that A's infielder Nomar Garciaparra was removed from Saturday's game in the sixth inning for precautionary reasons. Manager Bob Geren told the media that the move was made due to the score of the game and the fact the Nomar hasn't seen much time on the field.

Our View:

Nomar is unreliable due to his fading health, and his fantasy value is gone at this point. He isn't quite 100 percent yet, but expect to see him on the field a bit more often going forward.

July 3, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra got the start at first base on Friday and made the most of it. The oft-injured hitter went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the A's embarrassing 15-3 loss to the Indians.

Our View:

The RBI was just Nomah's tenth this season, and despite all the fond memories he has joined many others in the realm of fantasy irrelevance.

June 19, 2009

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Oakland A's infielder Nomar Garciaparra will be limited to pinch hitting duties for the rest of the week due to his chronic calf troubles. Garciaparra may also DH when the team returns to AL play, as the A's don't want to risk hurting the calf anymore.

Our View:

Nomar's chronic calf injury is likely to hinder him the rest of the season, and unless he really starts tearing it up at the dish he may find himself riding the pine for the majority of the season. If he can't play the field on a regular basis, the team can't afford to play him everyday at DH, considering his .259 average. His is a risky fantasy play going forward, even in Al-only leagues. Find someone who you can count on being in the lineup before you take a chance on Nomar.

June 13, 2009

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that the A's have activated infielder Nomar Garciaparra off the DL. In a corresponding move, the team sent Aaron Cunningham to Triple-A Sacramento. Garciaparra was out with a strained right calf.

Our View:

Garciaparra had a pinch-hit single last night after being activated before the game, and he is expected to be in the lineup today. Check back to make sure he is playing, but he should be safe to deploy in fantasy lineups.

June 9, 2009

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Nomar Garciaparra took ground balls on Monday. He still has not started running as he recovers from a strained right calf.

Our View:

Nomar looks to be a long way off from returning, but the fact that he is taking a few grounders is a good sign. Things should progress quickly when he is able to start running, but it looks like next week could be the earliest he could return. It may be later than that, however.

June 7, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra is hitting off a tee, but is yet to start running while recovering from a strained right calf, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Garciaparra won't be activated from the DL on the A's homestand that ends Thursday against Minnesota.

May 27, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra has been placed on the 15-day DL with a strained right calf, according to TSN. Pitcher Jeff Gray was recalled from the minors as the adjoining move.

Our View:

This is the second time his calf has landed him on the DL this season. He only held value in AL-only leagues.

May 26, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra sat out his second straight game Monday with tenderness in his right calf, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

That is the same calf that landed him on the DL last month. Manager Bob Geren is hoping Garciaparra is ready to return for tonight's home game against Seattle.

May 25, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra got his first day off Sunday since being activated from the DL two days earlier, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

He was an option for the DH role, but skipper Bob Geren decided to go with Jack Cust instead. Saturday's game went 11 innings, and Geren wanted to give Garciaparra some rest.

May 22, 2009

MLB.com reports that Nomar Garciaparra was activated from the 15-day DL on Friday and he was in the starting lineup at first base for the A's. He had been recovering from a strained calf. He has not played since April 29.

Our View:

Nomar has not been a fantasy factor this season and he probably won't see regular enough playing time to be worth consideration. He was hitting .231 at the time of his injury.

May 20, 2009

The A's will decide if Nomar Garciaparra is fit to come off the DL today, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He has been recovering from a strained right calf.

Our View:

Garciaparra will provide needed depth in the A's infield, but his fantasy value will be limited to AL-only leagues.

May 18, 2009

The Contra Costa Times reports that Nomar Garciaparra, who is dealing with a sore right calf, ran the bases, took ground balls, and took batting practice prior to Monday's game. He is expected to be activated from the DL on Wednesday.

Our View:

Garciaparra would likely join Bobby Crosby at third base, but could also spell Jason Giambi some across the diamond. He does not hold much, if any, fantasy value.

May 18, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra's ailing right calf was sore following his workout Saturday, and it seems that Wednesday might be the best day for him to come off the DL, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

The A's will face Rays' lefty Scott Kazmir on Wednesday. Garciaparra will provide depth to Oakland's infield, but won't hold much fantasy value outside of AL-only leagues.

May 14, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra ran the bases Wednesday and noted that was the first time he really pushed it since landing on the DL with a strained right calf, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Manager Bob Geren expects to activate Garciaparra either this weekend at Detroit or early next week. He will provide needed depth to the A's infield, but his fantasy value is limited to AL-only leagues.

May 11, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra took batting practice on the field, and he feels that he is making progress in his recovery from a strained right calf, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

This is encouraging, but Garciaparra is still unsure if he will be ready to come off the DL when eligible on Friday.

May 8, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra did some light running Thursday and could be activated from the DL a week from today, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He is recovering from a strained right calf.

Our View:

The A's will be pleased to get him back to provide depth in the infield, but he only holds fantasy value in deeper leagues, with a .231 average over 39 at-bats.

May 6, 2009

Manager Bob Geren is hopeful that Nomar Garciaparra will be ready to come off the DL when first eligible May 14, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He is recovering from a strained right calf.

Our View:

Garciaparra is only hitting .231 over 39 at-bats this season, and is only worth holding in deeper AL-only leagues.

May 4, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra went to Boston to work with a physical therapist for his strained right calf, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Garciaparra could return to the diamond in mid-May, barring a setback. He was only hitting .231 over 39 at-bats, and should only be stashed in deeper AL-only leagues.

April 29, 2009

Infielder Nomar Garciaparra will land on the 15-day DL on Wednesday due to a right calf strain, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Our View:

For Nomar, a "strain" could lead to months on the sidelines. Mark Ellis will also land on the disabled list, and the A's may need to lean more heavily on Bobby Crosby as a utility infielder.

April 28, 2009

According to the San Fransisco Chronicle, Nomar Garciaparra left Tuesday's game in the second inning with tightness in his calf. He was replaced in the lineup by Bobby Crosby.

Our View:

Nomar dealt with this same issue earlier in the season and appears to have re-aggravated the injury. He may be looking at a DL stint, but we don't yet know the seriousness of the injury.

April 25, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI as Oakland beat Tampa Bay 5-2 on Saturday.

Our View:

Nomar is 3-for-8 since returning from a calf injury that kept him out for nearly a week. He started at third base and hit sixth today, but was lifted for defensive purposes later in the game.

April 23, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra was held out of Wednesday's game due to cold weather and damp field conditions, but skipper Bob Geren expects Garciaparra to start Friday against the Rays at McAfee Coliseum, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Garciaparra is only hitting .179 over 28 at-bats this season, and should be left for AL-only and deeper mixed leagues for Friday.

April 22, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra sat out for the fourth time in five games Tuesday with calf tightness, but skipper Bob Geren noted that Garciaparra may be able to return today against the Padres, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Garciappara is hitting a mere .179 over 28 at-bats this season, and is only worth consideration for AL-only and deeper mixed leagues.

April 19, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra was out of Oakland's lineup with a tight right calf for the second straight game on Sunday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

Garciaparra seems to have carved out an everyday role in Oakland's lineup when healthy, although that's been a huge problem for him throughout his career. His value seems limited to AL-only or very deep mixed leagues at the moment.

April 17, 2009

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Nomar Garciaparra will be back in the A's lineup for their Friday evening game against Toronto.

Our View:

He was held out of Wednesday's game as a precaution, so he is ready to go tonight. Feel free to put him back in your lineup as well.

April 16, 2009

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Nomar Garciaparra's right calf injury is not that serious and that he withheld playing on Wednesday as a precaution. He hopes to be back in the lineup on Friday.

Our View:

Nomar missed nearly two months of last season with a similar injury. He is among the more injury prone players out there, and his performance so far this season does not warrant much fantasy consideration.

April 15, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra was not in the lineup on Wednesday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He is still nursing a tight calf.

Our View:

Garciaparra indicated that this is not a major issue and that he is just being cautious. He should be back soon for the A's. Bobby Crosby will start at third with Eric Chavez still out.

April 15, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra was forced out of Tuesday's game against Boston after one inning due to tightness in his right calf, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:

He started the game at third base, and was replaced by Bobby Crosby. His status is uncertain for Wednesday's game.

April 14, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra started and played all nine innings at third base in the A's 8-2 win over the Red Sox on Monday. He was 1-for-4 with a solo home run off of Jon Lester.

Our View:

There's no doubt that Garciaparra enjoyed notching his first round-tripper of the season against the Red Sox, who seemingly gave up on him earlier in his career. However, the veteran did strikeout twice in the game and is hitting just .217 to start the season.

April 13, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra will cover first base for tonight's home game against Boston, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Jason Giambi will serve in the DH role.

Our View:

Garciaparra is only 1-for-9 at McAfee Coliseum so far this season, but may have some success against his former team tonight.

April 6, 2009

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Nomar Garciaparra will start at first base for Oakland on opening day. Jason Giambi will DH, Jack Cust will start in right, and Travis Buck and Daric Barton will start the game as a reserve.

Our View:

The team feels this is there best lineup against left-handers, at least for the time being. Although Nomar was not expected to be an everyday player, it appears that the team is wanting to squeeze him into the lineup ahead of their younger players.

March 30, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored as the A's beat the Dodgers 9-5 on Monday. He started at first base in the game.

Our View:

Depending on the health of Eric Chavez, who started today at third, Nomar could be the opening day third baseman. It would appear he has less of a chance at anchoring first base as the roster includes Daric Barton and Jason Giambi. He is hitting .407 through 27 spring at-bats.

March 22, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra was 2-for-3 on Saturday as the A's fell to the Giants 8-4. He is an even hitting .500 this spring.

Our View:

Nomar should see a decent number of at-bats this season even though he doesn't have a true position. When healthy he can still hit, but his power is essentially gone now.

March 16, 2009

Manager Bob Geren said the Nomar Garciaparra will play "quite a bit" at third base this season, regardless of Eric Chavez's health, and will also see time at shortstop, first base and designated hitter, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Our View:

While he may or may not be in the starting lineup Opening Day, it looks like Garciaparra's versatility will allow him to play much more than the typical reserve, which could give him nice value as a late-round sleeper in AL-only drafts. As always, he'll have to stay healthy if he wants to provide any value, something he's had a very tough time with throughout his career.

March 6, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra officially joins the Athletics as his deal has been finalized, according to the Associated Press. It is a one-year deal, but financial details were not disclosed.

Our View:

The 35-year-old vet will provide a right-handed bat at the corner infield spots, and his fantasy value looks to be limited. He could also see time in the DH spot.

March 3, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra has reportedly agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Athletics, according to the SF Chronicle. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View:

The 35-year-old vet will provide a right-handed bat at the corner infield spots, and his fantasy value looks to be limited.

March 3, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra is nearing a deal with Oakland, according to MLB.com. It will be a one-year contract.

Our View:

The 13-year vet will provide a right-handed bat at the corner infield spots. His fantasy value looks to be limited.

February 26, 2009

Nomar Garciaparra will either decide to sign with the Oakland A's or opt for retirement, according to the Contra Costa Times. When he will make his decision has not been determined.

Our View:

The 35-year-old Garciaparra, who hit .264 in 55 games with the Dodgers a season ago, was reportedly being pursued by the Phillies as well, but they have seemingly withdrawn their name from contention.

February 23, 2009

Oakland is offering Nomar Garciaparra more at-bats than Philadelphia, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Our View:

If the A's do sign Garciaparra, it would not stop them from continuing their pursuit of Orlando Cabrera.

February 21, 2009

ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that the Oakland A's are interested in Nomar Garciaparra to help balance out their lineup, which is weighed down with left-handed hitters.

Our View:

Last season with the Dodgers, Garciaparra went 19-for-56 with four homers and a gaudy 1.067 OPS against left-handed pitching.

February 6, 2009

The Phillies are still interested in Nomar Garciaparra, according to the Wilmington News Journal.

Our View:

The club does not expect an answer from him until the start of spring training, as the 35-year-old is still deciding if he wants to continue playing. He would fill the Phillies' need for a right-handed bat for the bench.

February 3, 2009

The Philadelphia Phillies still consider Nomar Garciaparra as their first choice for a right-handed hitter off the bench, according to MLB.com.

Our View:

Garciaparra is 35-years old and has not decided on whether or not he will play in 2009. Garciaparra has been slowed by injuries over the last couple of years but could provide value in a limited role.

January 21, 2009

The Philadelphia Phillies are interested in signing Nomar Garciaparra, though it's unknown if he is going to retire, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:

Philly has a need for a right-handed hitter off the bench, which is what Garciaparra would offer. He is now 35 years old, is an injury waiting to happen, and is far removed from the player he once was.

January 9, 2009

Fox Sports reports that free-agent infielder Nomar Garciaparra will be pursued by the Phillies.

Our View:

The 35-year-old has been consistently injured since leaving Boston in 2004. He would have to take a significant paycut no matter where he signs. His limited role would make him virtually worthless for fantasy purposes.
