Jason Giambi had a nice day at the plate on Sunday as the Rockies beat the D-Backs 5-1. Giambi went 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored, and two RBI in the win.
Giambi has done an excellent job since coming over from Oakland, and he has turned out to be a very important acquisition. He can spell Todd Helton down the stretch, and he will also provide a power bat off the bench in the postseason.
Jason Giambi started in place of Todd Helton at first base on Sunday. Helton was just getting a routine day off.
Giambi allowed manager Jim Tracy to rest Helton every once in a while, and he also provides a power bat off the bench. Every manager likes having flexibility, so it looks like acquiring Giambi was a good move by the Rockies.
According to the
Giambi hit .193 with 11 homers and 40 RBI in 83 games with the A's before being released on August 7th. The Rockies picked him up on the 24th and he's hit .444 with a pair of homers and four RBI in six games with Triple-A Colorado Springs. The Giambino will likley be a bat off the bench and may get a spot start or two to spell Todd Helton at first.
Confirming a previous report, the Colorado Rockies announced on Monday that they have agreed to a minor league contract with Jason Giambi, according to
This was announced over the weekend, but the team made it official today. Giambi won't be spending much time with the Triple-A club, as he will likely get a few games to get back in the groove before he joins the big club. He will be used as a left-handed bat off the bench, and could give Todd Helton a periodic rest at first base.
The
Giambi says he is 100 percent healthy after dealing with a quadriceps injury in Oakland earlier this year, and ready to help contribute down the stretch. Hopefully the thin air of Colorado will help his swing, as the veteran slugger was dreadful in Oakland this season, batting just .193 with 11 home runs in 269 at-bats. He will spell Todd Helton at first base and serve as a pinch-hitter.
