Carl Crawford: Ted Carlson
If we look at past results, this debate may boil down to whether you prefer to have 10 more stolen bases or an extra 6-7 homers and 10-12 RBI. The batting averages are a wash, and both speedsters have settled in the 90s for runs over recent seasons. I'm sure Ray will say that he'll take the steals knowing that he can find power later in the draft. But I prefer Crawford for two reasons. First, he is in a contract year. Second, I'm not sold that Ellsbury is a lock to best Crawford in steals. Yes, Jacoby won the race in 2009, but you may forget that Carl held the lead at the All-Star break. I can bank on Crawford finishing with the upper hand in homers and RBI, and I believe there is a decent chance he sets a new career-high in steals as he runs with dollar signs in his eyes.
Jacoby Ellsbury: Ray Flowers
This is like trying to decide between Sofia Vergara and Roselyn Sanchez - you aren't going to turn either one of them away if they walk into your bedroom. In 2010, though, I prefer Vergara… I mean Ellsbury. Why? There is more upside to be mined in the stolen base category. Jacoby had a 10-steal advantage over Crawford last year (70 to 60), and with 120 steals the past two years, he has bettered the best two-year total of Crawford (114). Ellsbury is also younger, doesn't have the specter of a potential trade hanging over his head, and has a cooler name. Other than the home run and steals categories last season, these two men nearly matched each other category for category, so I'll take the bustier… I mean younger Ellsbury for my team and hope for some continued growth.
