No Kidd-ing Around

After flirting with the Knicks, Jason Kidd couldn't ignore the dollar signs offered by Mark Cuban. The Mavericks and the free agent point guard have agreed to a three-year deal worth more than $25 million. He can officially sign the new contract on Wednesday. Due to their cap plans, the Knicks weren't going to offer Kidd more than roughly $18 million over three years.

Kidd joined the Mavericks in February of 2008. He was the key piece in a eight-player deal that included cash and two future first-round picks. The Mavericks are 66-45 since he arrived, but they lost in the first round of the playoffs in 2008 (Hornets) and the second round this past May (Nuggets).

The past season, Kidd averaged a career-low 9.0 points, but he produced 8.7 assists, 6.2 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 1.6 threes and tied a career-low at 2.3 turnovers. He also played in at least 80 games for the fourth straight season. Kidd is a strange fantasy talent in that nobody can match combination of assists, rebounds, steals, threes, and turnovers, but he adds very little in the scoring and percentage categories. He continues to be rated as a top-10 fantasy talent in many systems, but his owners need to be sure they build up enough scoring around Kidd if they take him late in round one or early in round two.

Kidd averaged a career-low 9.0 points last season.
Kidd turned 36 this past March, and it's reasonable to expect his numbers to go in the wrong direction in the near future. Still, the Mavericks clearly think he has enough juice left to produce similar numbers in 2009-10. He won't be in our top-10 entering the 2009-10, but he will almost certainly make the top-25, if not top-20.

The Mavericks made Kidd their top priority this summer, but they won't stop here. They will sign big man Marcin Gortat to a five-year, $30 million offer sheet on Wednesday, and general manager Donnie Nelson will spend the coming days trying to offload the Jerry Stackhouse's expiring contract and Erick Dampier's non-guaranteed contract for new parts.

We know that Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki will remain fantasy studs in 2009-10, but we'll need to see what the Mavericks get in return for Stackhouse and/or Dampier before projecting numbers for Jason Terry and Josh Howard.
