Not many catching prospects win a batting title at Double-A as Angel Salome (C, MIL) did in 2008. With most catching prospects, there is a question with either the defense or the offense (which is what makes prospects like Matt Wieters so rare). For Salome, the questions are definitely about his defense. While he has a strong arm, his footwork behind the plate kept him from throwing out would be stealers last season and he still needs to refine his game-calling skills. He has shown improvement in throwing out runners this season. After allowing 90 steals last year, he has thrown out 37% of runners this season. At the same time, he continues to produce with the bat. After a slow start that saw him hit only .191 in April, Salome has improved each month, raising his average to .284. In his last ten games, he is hitting .395 with two home runs and eight RBI. With the Brewers currently is first place, they would probably be reticent to hand over the reins to a rookie catcher, but once he is deemed ready he could certainly take the place of Mike Rivera backing up Jason Kendall and Salome should be ready to challenge for the starting job in 2010.Associate Editor
