The high banks of Daytona International Speedway were actually constructed using dirt from what is now the infield of the track. The resulting hole was later filled with water to create what is now known as Lake Lloyd. Although groundbreaking for the famed 2.5-mile track began in 1957, lights weren't added until 1998. However, the first night race wasn't held until 1999 because heavy smoke from wildfires forced the '98 event to be postponed until October. The second race at Daytona has been held under the lights ever since.
Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth could find a repeat performance tough to come by. Only four drivers have completed the season sweep at the track. Bobby Allison last accomplished the feat in 1982. However, Kenseth has already defied the number by winning the 500 from the 39th starting position. It was the lowest starting spot for a race winner and just one of 26 times that a driver has won from outside the top 10. In fact, more drivers (28) have won from the front row than all positions outside the top 10 combined.
