The San Francisco 49ers are so removed from their dynasty era in the late 80s and early 90s that when they go prospecting, all that comes up in recent years has been "fools gold." After slugging through the "dark ages" with their last two head coaches, Dennis Erickson and Mike Nolan (a combined 27-60 record), the Niners have started fresh with new head coach Mike Singletary. The 49ers were clearly rejuvenated last season when they finished 5-4 under Singletary's watch after starting 2-5 under the departed Nolan. Even though Singletary is known as a taskmaster, the players were reportedly euphoric when it was announced at the end of the year that he would continue as coach after accepting a four-year contract extension. After the signing, team president Jed York said, "This is the last time our season ends in December." You can be sure the straight-shooting Singletary will echo those same sentiments as he attempts to turn around a once proud franchise that has not visited the playoffs, nor seen a winning season since 2002. Perhaps the 49ers' recent draft class featuring stud-receiver Michael Crabtree and bruising-runner Glen Coffee will contribute to a turnaround this franchise sorely needs.Associate Editor
