NFFC Waiver Wire Targets

With no more time left to pick up free agents after Week 13, it was "all in" for the participants in the National Fantasy Football Championship (NFFC) last week. Having enough depth is critical in the NFFC's playoff weeks, but if you can find a gem along the way that improves your chances of winning the grand prizes of $100,000 and $40,000 immensely.

Nowhere is that level of production more important than at the quarterback position. With several previously top quarterbacks struggling (yes Jay Cutler, I'm looking at you), the importance of finding production off the waiver wire at this stage of the season is enhanced considerably. That's why it wasn't surprising to see so many NFFC owners use the money they had left to pursue some potential quarterback dividends on the waiver wire last week.

In the 14-team NFFC Classic event, Ryan Fitzpatrick was picked up in eight leagues while carrying a high bid of $210. Chris Redman was acquired in seven leagues and had a high price of $105. Vince Young was still available in two leagues and carries a high price of $189.

In the 12-team NFFC Primetime, Fitzpatrick was picked up in eight leagues and carried a high free-agent bid of $141. Alex Smith was picked up in three leagues, carrying a high price of $190. Matthew Stafford was acquired in five leagues with a high bid of $85 while Young was picked up in two leagues with a high bid of $90.

Of that group, Young and Smith are making the most noise presently. Both had strong performances again in Week 13 as they each threw a pair of touchdown passes and Smith topped 300 yards passing.

Before the season began, few fantasy owners likely expected two of the biggest stretch run producers to be Vince Young and Alex Smith, but both are emerging as strong starting options. If that continues, one or both could figure prominently in determining which owners emerge as this year's national champions.

Here is a look at some of the other top bids in the NFFC's two events last week:

NFFC CLASSIC
Sam Aiken (acquired in 12 leagues/high bid of $201)
Danny Amendola (13/$350)
Anthony Fasano (8/$300)
Jerome Harrison (7/$358)
Chad Simpson (8/$201)

NFFC PRIMETIME
Kenny Britt (4/$387)
Jerome Harrison (6/$211)
Chris Jennings (9/$381)
Bo Scaife (6/$138)

Britt was still available in four Primetime leagues and the owners who snared him last week, received immediate dividends as he delivered another strong game, including a touchdown grab, in Week 13 against the Colts. Aiken has emerged as the No. 3 wide receiver in New England and caught an 81-yard touchdown in the Week 13 loss to the Dolphins. Amendola, meanwhile, is more of a depth option at this point as the No. 3 receiver for the Rams.

The Cleveland tag team of Jerome Harrison and Chris Jennings were hot targets on the Waiver Wire as well. With Jerome Lewis done for the season, the Browns are searching for a starting running back. Harrison got the first call in Week 13 and delivered nicely for the owners who picked him up last week.

Bo Scaife had his best game of the season in Week 13, catching a touchdown pass against Indianapolis, and Fasano had a decent game in the win over New England. With depth continuing to be an issue at the tight end position, Scaife could prove to be a valuable pickup for the playoff run while Fasano could have some mild value as a matchup starter.

Upside and current production, there was plenty of both available on the waiver wire in the NFFC last week. With the playoffs set to begin, it will be interesting to see if any of the moves made in the final week of free agency pay off big as the owners compete for the grand prizes in both national events.
