Qualifying Recap: Ford 400

Apparently, Jimmie Johnson doesn't like giving the competition the slightest bit of hope. With a lap of 173.919 mph, Johnson put the No. 48 Chevy on the pole for Sunday's season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. His quest to win a record fourth straight title just got easier thanks to his fifth pole of the year.

For the second straight year, Scott Speed will start on the outside of the front row for this event. He went on to finish 16th in that event, and the prospect of a repeat should have fantasy owners intrigued. After a third-place effort in qualifying, Marcos Ambrose might be worth a look as well. Mark Martin and Tony Stewart rounded out the top five.

Kevin Harvick, who has a very solid career record at Homestead, qualified in the sixth position. Meanwhile, Ryan Newman joined his boss in the top 10 with a seventh-place effort. Three-time track winner Greg Biffle will start eighth, and Bill Elliott delivered an impressive ninth-place run. Clint Bowyer completed the top-10 qualifiers.

There were several surprises among the top 20. Regan Smith, Michael McDowell and David Gilliland will all roll off in the top half of the field. On the same not, several big names struggled. Jeff Gordon, Juan Pablo Montoya, Carl Edwards and Kasey Kahne will all start outside the top 20. Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin, along with Matt Kenseth and Brian Vickers, are among the drivers that will start outside the top 30 Sunday.

Five drivers failed to make the show, including some typical field fillers. Joe Nemechek, Dave Blaney and David Stremme all failed to qualify.
