NFFC Profile

While many fantasy football players spends countless days and hours agonizing over their lineup decisions each week, Rod Nixon prefers to keep it simple.

Nixon has a core group of starters that he relies on each week as the foundation for his team's success. He then utilizes the matchups to work any potential advantages that will give him an edge over the competition.

Last week, Nixon's formula proved to be better than anyone in the National Fantasy Football Championship's (NFFC) Primetime event.

Big weeks from Maurice Jones-Drew (29.8 points), Drew Brees (25.7), Vincent Jackson (24.3) and the Miami defense (22) led the way as Nixon's Who's Next team in Las Vegas League 3 topped the Primetime field with 172.20 points.

Nixon had his core group locked into place last week. They are:

QB: Drew Brees
RB: Maurice Jones-Drew
RB: Ryan Grant
WR: Vincent Jackson
Flex: Pierre Thomas

With the exception of a disappointing performance from Grant, each of those players came through in a big way for Nixon in Week 8. Thomas was especially huge in the Saints' Monday Night win over Atlanta.

"Santana Moss is usually my third wide receiver but he was on a bye so I started Malcolm Floyd," Nixon said. "I started Floyd over Michael Jenkins and Nate Washington because my opponent was starting Philip Rivers."

Floyd didn't come through big for Nixon but the rest of his team put up strong numbers so it didn't matter. The key player was Jones-Drew, who busted off two huge TD runs against the Titans. That's just the type of performance you hope to get from a first-round pick.

"My draft strategy was to take the best available running back in Round 1," Nixon said. "I had the second pick so that was MJD. I then wanted to take the best available quarterback in Round 2 and that was Brees and I was surprised he fell that far.

"After that, my plan was to just draft as many running backs and wide receivers as possible and hope I hit on some of them. I think my best draft picks, other than the first two, were Vincent Jackson in Round 4 and Donald Driver in Round 7."

The 42-year-old Nixon lives in Albuquerque, NM where he works as an air traffic controller. He moved there nearly three years ago after retiring from the U.S. Navy.
