Perfection is an admirable trait to pursue but a difficult one to accomplish. We all make mistakes. That's part of our genetic makeup.
But when it comes to fantasy football, the mistakes you make can have painful consequences. Take BenJarvus Green-Ellis, for example.
Last week, I touted Green-Ellis as a top sleeper pick to grab off the waiver wire if he was available in your league (and given how he was the fourth-string running back on the Patriots a couple of weeks ago, chances are he was available). I wasn't the only one touting Green-Ellis. A large number of respected industry experts also labeled him as a can't miss sleeper pick for Week 8.
The reason?
New England was playing Tampa Bay. The Bucs entered last week with one of the worst rushing defenses in the league. So even though Green-Ellis was the backup to Laurence Maroney, there was a school of thought which said he would do well (as he did the week before) because New England would control the game and he would get his chance to shine in the fourth quarter.
The result? A brutally ugly seven carries for six-yard performance.
It was the biggest swing and a miss of the fantasy season to date. And no one was immune from the impact. Plenty of owners in the National Fantasy Football Championship (NFFC) felt the agony of Green-Ellis soiling the bed in one of the easiest matchups any running back will face this season.
With the NFFC season reaching its midway point, plenty of owners dived in to snare Green-Ellis, hoping to take advantage of the sweet matchup. He was picked up off the Waiver Wire by 21 teams in the NFFC Classic event with a high bid of $363. He was even more attractive in the NFFC Primetime, being picked up by 23 teams with a high bid of $355.
That turned out to be a gigantic waste of money by all involved given Green-Ellis' putrid showing.
But not every pickup last week stunk up the joint as badly as Green-Ellis did. In the Primetime event, nine teams grabbed Malcolm Floyd (with one team only paying $1) and Floyd delivered a touchdown in the Chargers' win over Kansas City.
Here is a look at some of the other Week 7 pickups, which proved profitable in the NFFC:
NFFC CLASSIC
- Greg Camarillo (3 leagues picked up in/low bid $6) - 5 receptions for 55 yards.
- Shonn Greene (1/$8) - 144 yards, 2 TDs.
- Bobby Wade (2/$24) - 4 receptions for 66 yards.
NFFC PRIMETIME
- Laveranues Coles (picked up in four leagues/low bid of $23) - a TD for the second straight game.
- New England defense (5/$39) - defensive touchdown.
- Justin Fargas (7/$186) - 67 yards rushing, 3 receptions for 23 yards.
- James Jones (14/$1) - TD in second straight game.
- Sammie Stroughter (4/$21) - 3 receptions for 63 yards.
So while Green-Ellis left a stench that will not soon be forgotten, plenty of other players delivered nicely for their NFFC owners off the waiver wire last week.
What will Week 8 bring? Stay tuned.
