From a cloud of black smoke and the painfully pungent smell of burned rubber emerged the No. 48 car after Jimmie Johnson took the checkered flag and spun a black stain down the straightaway at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday. The win inched Johnson a step closer to racing immortality—a.k.a. Cale Yarborough and his three consecutive championships—assuming he seals the deal this week at the Ford 400. Last Sunday’s race was a bitter sweet victory, too, considering Johnson was clearly concerned with his race car after Saturday’s final practice session.Senior Editor
